Jacobo and his team mates are now playing the National American Football Leage, in the A series, the highest category. Which means that they have to travel often to play all around the country: ” The best suitcase we could own is the Gladiator Kick-off trolley. It’s just as us, resistant, hard and durable… and elegant, but maybe that last thing is not something we have in common…” they say jokingly.

“If you look closely, you’ll notice that the suitcase design is inspired by the shape of an american football ball” they say as they put on their black eye routine in their faces. That’s a grease which is applied as a rectangular patch just below the eyes, from the cheeks to the cheek bone, in order to block any shining from the lights or sun.

It’s Wednesday, a cold and damp afternoon. Jacobo has been working all day and combines his job with the training at the Hospitalet Pioners.

They train 3 days a week, adding to the gym sessions, so they are physically prepared. It’s a very demanding sport, one must be strong to play it. A knock with another player could break you anything. That is not something Jacobo explains but something that all of us are thinking while we do the shooting.

The Pioners team started in 1988, in Hospitalet de Llobregat city, becoming, together with the Badalona Dracs, Bracelona Búfals and Barcelona Boxers (now extinct), the pioneers in this sport in Spain. That’s where their name came from. The four teams together put up the first official competition ever played in Spain, the Catalan American Football League in 1988, and the Pioners got the third position in the finals.

Iván Falcón is another player in Jacobo’s team. He plays in the Spanish national team of American Football: the Team Spain. And he was the runner-up in last year’s national team match agains Italy in the European Championship. He is an autistic person and he loves this sport and it also helps him. Jacobo, Iván and all the team members really live and enjoy this sport. Now it’s time to start the match.

¡Kick-off and let the game begin!
